Painting Challenge entry 15: Nurgle Daemon Prince

Time for the next fortnight challenge entry, this time with the theme "Favorite Character". I went with a Nurgle Daemon Prince to celebrate the loving touch of Papa Nurgle. Chaos has always been my favorite faction in Warhammer and now that I sort of restarted it by digging up old minis it had to be the way to go. Of the four Chaos gods Nurgle has somehow always been my favorite. The disease ridden greenish hordes just somehow caught my eye.

To lead my new forces I of course needed a mighty hero and what would be better than a daemon prince. Sadly I'm not too thrilled about the Jabba the Hutt style aesthetics of Nurgle Greater Daemons etc. and then the regular Daemon Princes just look a bit too clean to be aligned to Nurgle. So I really had no choice but to convert something a bit more suitable for myself. I like the looks of GW's Plague Drones and thought that a bloated corpse fly would be the best shape for a mighty champion of Nurgle to morph into when he is bestowed with more and more of Nurgles gifts. The mini itself is made up of parts from GW's Daemon Prince, Plague Drone and Chaos Spawn box. And a helluva lot of green stuff...

Nearly everything on the mini except for details has been painted with an airbrush. The armor on his back was painted green with brown for shadows and yellow for highlights. The skin was painted with violet in the recesses and in the areas of any cuts and boils to simulate bruising and then covered with a light layer of yellowish brown and a final highlight of light grey. This was all washed down with brown and red inks to give the shadows a bit of definition and to have the lowest part of the body look suitably gory. I finally added a bit of violet on the tips of the wings to add some contrast.

All the oozing pus and paint was done with GW's special effect paints. Mostly worked out great, but I put a bit too much on his stomach area and wasn't able to clean it up afterwards. Didn't have time to repaint the area with the skin tone so I just had to add more pus to get him done in time for the challenge.

Nurgle Hero

Continuing to empty my desk of half-finished projects before Sunday. Earning their place in the spotlight today is a Nurgle Hero from GW. Love the mini, too bad that he probably won't be seeing that much playing time, at least whenever competitive lists come into play.

I went for the same yellowish skin colour that I used on the Gorebeast Chariot I did a while back. Started by airbrushing dark brown on shadow areas, followed by dark yellow and finally a highlight of dark yellow + light grey in about 50/50 mix. Shoulderpad painted with an airbrush too.

I decided to use this mini as a training for using the GW technical paints a bit better than I did on the Chariot and Knights. The blood effect looks a lot better now as does the slimy stuff too. The rusty parts are done with a mix of GW's Typhus Corrosion and AK Interactives Orange Rust.

I'm actually starting to think I should do the Nurgle bases as more of a autumn themed thing instead of a winter theme as I still haven't figured out a nice way of doing snow that seems right in the eyes of a Finn like me :) Baking soda + PVA glue looks quite nice, but I've heard a lot of people complaining that it turns yellow with time. Anyhow the yellow autumn grass with dark ground looks quite nice and is really fast and simple to do so I might stick with that only for those reasons too.

Papa Nurgle

More or less finished a few Nurgle models today. Didn't quite get them done by yesterdays tournament, but they were good enough for gaming so I decided to sleep the night :) We finally ended up third even though we had the two first games starting quite catastrofically.

The bases are still not finished as I'm planning on doing winter bases for them and I'm missing snow for basing. I decided to try the new GW special effects paints on these guys. Pretty happy with the rust and slime effects, but couldn't really get the blood paint to work like I wanted. Maybe needs more practice. The knights still miss some weathering and effects as I need to practice using the blood effect more. And the banner is still WIP.

Base colors done with an airbrush and detail using a normal brush. Wear done using a sponge and dark brown paint and then rust and streaking grime done with AK interactive products.

Pictures taken with a new photo background that I built using some old shelf which I based and added a background image on. Works quite nicely even with only my phones camera.

Papa Nurgle approaches

I've been painting some greenish chaos boys for a Fantasy Battle Doubles Tournament next weekend. Starting to be more or less complete. Still need to paint the shields for the knights and paint their banner. Wear and gore are also missing but I'm probably gonna do that later as they are already of tabletop quality or higher. Time for hi-fi later :)

I also got my copy of Mega Wargames today. Some seriously epic tables and miniature collections there. Also slightly depressing to know that it would take decades to reach the size of those collections. Anyway a great book and I do recommend buying a copy!
